Marilu Dominguez-Flores - Cancer Warrior

I was born in Mexico, and I came to the United States when I was fourteen years old. I've been living in Tinley Park, Il for 16 years now. I am married and I have two sons, twenty-seven and twenty years old. I never went to college, but I did complete High School. I currently work at the University of Illinois as a Building Service Supervisor. I contribute to the economy of my household, and also care for my youngest son as he pursues his higher education.

One significant life challenge that I faced began a few years ago when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. It was a very difficult experience, but I try to focus on the blessings that came out of it. During my journey through breast cancer I was lucky to meet two of my very best friends, as we all struggled through breast cancer together. My journey reassured me how much I love my family, I love my life, and I love God, and that's the main way that I stayed positive throughout it all. I think about all of the good things God has given me, and I feel blessed and lucky to have been able to beat cancer. I have also learned to love working out, and I’m starting to love to cook.

I will tell all women to take care of themselves first--to become selfish--because if we are not well, we won't be able to give our best selves to others. I encourage them to find God if they believe in God, to workout, and to eat healthy and clean. I also go to therapy at least once a month. This is how I stay positive in the midst of life’s ups and downs.
